In the busyness of everyday life, nothing anchors our hearts like starting each day with Jesus. That’s why I’ve written various articles on the best Christian devotional books to use during your quiet time with God.
The best devotional books include Scripture, reflection, and gentle encouragement to start (or continue) your day.
Below you’ll find warm, concise overviews with direct links to our full reviews. It’s my prayer that these articles will help you find the best devotional book for the season.
Devotionals for every season of life
I’ve broken this article into the following sections:
1. Why daily devotionals still matter today
Sometimes all I have are a few minutes in the morning to connect with God. It often looks messy. I’m praying on the drive to work or while I’m unloading the dishwasher.
When I have five or 10 minutes and can find a comfortable spot to sit, I’ll grab a Christian devotional.
It takes the legwork out of morning quiet time with God by providing Scripture, a brief reflection, and prayer prompts.
As a former newspaper journalist who juggled a crazy work schedule — and now a married woman with kids still at home — my schedule has always ebbed and flowed. If you’re struggling with a daily devotional habit, you’re not alone!
I put together a guide on how to do daily devotions with a busy schedule.
God listens and answers prayers
I now edit the faithstoryteller.org website, which includes Christian testimony stories. I see how God answers prayers in meaningful and often unexpected ways.
No matter how busy life gets, even a one-sentence prayer each morning as you get out of bed can help. Give yourself lots of grace!
God will meet you wherever you are, whenever you reach out to him, in whatever way you do.
And if you can find five or more minutes to open a devotional book, I believe the time you invest will be returned!
2. Best daily devotionals for everyone (365-day reads)
Many Christians enjoy devotional books that offer one reading per day. These 365-day devotional books become faithful friends that God uses to speak to you as the weeks, months, and seasons come and go.
I’ve carefully curated some of the best 365-day devotionals to consider. I’ve included devotional books with brief readings for busy schedules, as well as other options, such as historic and modern classics.
That includes “Jesus Calling,” the international best-seller and one of the most popular recommendations.

We’ve listed more options by topic and season below. You can also browse our full collection of Christian book recommendations.
3. Christian resources of prayer
The main goal of devotional time is to connect with God through prayer.
Whether it’s a formal, structured prayer, such as saying the “Our Father,” or a more free-flowing style of prayer, such as a conversation or spiritual journaling, the ultimate goal is a daily relationship with our Heavenly Father.
Whether you’re just beginning to build a prayer life or longing to go deeper, these books on prayer for Christians can help.
I personally use and recommend “Breath as Prayer,” which also happens to be our readers’ most popular pick!
Devotional stories about prayer
As you spend time in prayer, you may also be encouraged by our collection of God wink stories and testimonies of answered prayers.
If you’ve ever struggled with trusting God, you’re not alone. We also have a collection of testimonies about trusting God. They share how everyday Christians (including mature believers!) had to let go of control and surrender to him.
4. Best devotionals for women and moms
The deeper I grow in my faith, the more tender I sense God’s love.
As a woman, I can attest that there’s something about our heart and spirit that longs for and needs a Heavenly Father’s reassurance, steadfastness, and faithfulness.
That’s why I’ve curated a list of 17 best devotionals for women written by other women. These devotional books speak specifically to our unique experience as daughters of God.
Of all the devotionals for women that we recommend, the most popular is “He Whispers Your Name.”
Devotionals for moms
Sometimes you need a devotional to speak directly to the worries and anxiety you feel as a mother, which is why I created this recommended list of devotionals for moms.
I know how worried you can get about your kids. It doesn’t matter if they’re in diapers, playing youth sports, or have moved out. A mother’s heart is tender!
That’s why our most popular mother’s devotional is “Midnight Mom Devotionals.” It's the best for calming an anxious mind when the rest of the house is quiet, but you still can’t sleep.

5. Best devotionals for men and fathers
I believe God designed men with strength, purpose, and a deep desire to lead well.
My husband has always sought resources that speak directly to the unique needs of his heart, and I sought his advice as well as the recommendations of other men on devotionals for your current season of life.
Many of the best devotionals for men weave in modern interests, such as football or hunting, as well as classic devotionals that are written by men for men.
The most popular recommendation for men on our website is “The One Year Uncommon Life Daily Challenge.”
Devotionals for dads and sons
I’ve also curated the best devotionals for dads and sons, which my husband has used with our boys and which he often recommends to friends.
In fact, “Raising a Modern-Day Knight” is one of the top-selling devotional books we recommend.
“It’s a great book,” my husband told me. Seriously, that’s high praise!
He recently used it to write a letter to the teen boys in the youth group he leads, which speaks to how much it resonated with him. When you refer to and use a book years later, it’s a great one.
6. Devotionals for couples and relationship
My husband and I started doing a regular devotion together, and I’ve loved the intentional time we spend together with God.
As I’ve researched couples’ devotional time, I have options for every stage and season of your relationship.
I’ve curated these into a general list of recommended couples’ devotional books, which offer a great variety of options.
Our most popular recommendation is “#Stay Married: A Couple’s Devotional,” which only asks for 30 minutes once a week.
It also speaks to a modern audience who wants to weave Scripture and God’s truth with scientific research.
I appreciate how it covers topics that are often included in pre-marriage counseling, such as communication, navigating disagreements, and making decisions together.
Devotional books for dating couples
If you’re dating seriously or talking about marriage, there are some amazing devotions that also serve as a gentle marriage resource.
These devotions for dating couples can fit into even the busiest schedule — and are absolutely worth it!
Our most popular recommendation among readers is "Together with Christ.” The 52-week devotional “date night” ideas with Scripture, reflection questions, and activities to simply have fun together!
Devotionals for married couples
One of the most amazing things about marriage is how navigating the challenges together can bring you closer to each other and to God.
Selecting a devotional book for married couples is a great way to go deeper with your spouse, especially if you have many anniversaries under your belt!
Our most popular marriage devotional among our readers is “Devotions for a Sacred Marriage.”
It will challenge you to pursue holiness (instead of happiness) in your marriage — ultimately making your relationship more joyful.

7. Devotionals for teens and youth
The teenage years bring so many questions, pressures, and exciting first steps into adulthood.
To a parent, it can feel like an emotional roller-coaster! I’ve been there.
One day, your sweet kid is chatting happily with you in the passenger seat, and seemingly overnight, they’re a sullen teenager who isn’t saying a word.
To help, I’ve curated our list of the best devotionals for teen girls. I love how these devotionals speak directly to the identity, friendship, and dating questions that many are wrestling with.
As an adult who grew up without social media, it’s helpful to remember that this is an unfamiliar world for us, too.

8. Devotional journals
Many Faith Storytellers readers tell us that pairing a devotional book with a journal has deepened their faith.
They love “writing to think,” or “writing to pray,” or “writing to remember,” but don’t want the intimidation of a blank page.
That’s why I’ve curated this list of gorgeous devotional journals (which also make great gifts!) I recently received one and have cherished it.
Among our readers, the most popular is the “Prayer Journal for Women.”
Free Christian journaling prompts for devotion time
If you’re on a budget, you can also use some of our free resources, such as our 10 spiritual journal prompts with Bible verses and Christian story reflection prompts.

You’ll receive free journal prompts that correspond with each new testimony story, along with recommendations on books, devotionals, and more.
9. Devotional stories
Sometimes you don’t need a traditional devotional with a structured message, Bible verse, and pre-written prayer.
Instead, what you need is to know you’re not alone. That there are other Christians who feel the same way or have experienced similar trials.
That’s why I also recommend buying Christian books with testimonies. These are “Chicken Soup” style collections that allow you to see how God has worked in the lives of other believers.
As you read these testimony stories, take time to reflect on how God works in the storyteller’s lives. Pray about your own story, too!
The most popular testimonies book among our readers is “Faith Storytellers” because it includes 40 professionally edited testimony stories, along with a section in the front on how to write your own.
Readers have told us they enjoy reading one short testimony story from the book before bed.
10. How to choose the right devotional book for you
With so many devotional book options, choosing the right one can feel overwhelming. There are far more devotionals that any one person could read in their lifetime!
Start by asking yourself:
Time: Do you only have five minutes each morning or perhaps longer? In each of the articles I’ve written, I’ve highlighted which books are designed for people tight on time.
Season: Are you in a specific “season” of life, such as motherhood or marriage? Selecting a Christian devotional that speaks to a stage of life can be tremendously helpful.
Format: Some devotionals have a traditional structure of Scripture, reading, and prayer reflections or prompts. Others bring you “out of the box” with journaling or devotional stories.
There’s no wrong way to connect with God during your devotional time. So there’s really not a mistake you can make so long as the devotional is Christian and gospel-oriented.
Still, many readers have shared that once they picked the right book for them, their quiet time became a joyful “get to” instead of another “have to.”
For more practical guidance, I’ve shared personal stories and steps on how to choose a Christian devotional book.
