For me, reading the “Case for Christ” and other apologetics books was foundational to my faith and spiritual journey.
While I came to believe in Jesus through personal circumstances, these books helped me understand why being Christian is a logical and sound decision.
Once you dive into these entry-level apologetics resources, it’s my belief that you’ll also discover that the facts speak for themselves!

Why these are the best apologetics books for new Christians
I’ve selected Christian apologetics books that are written for everyday believers, not academics or scholars.
As a former journalist who once wrote newspaper articles for the masses, I believe some of the best writing appears “simple,” but that doesn’t mean it lacks depth.
That’s true for these books, which use clear language, real-life stories, and a “seeking” approach instead of heavy theology. I’m a fan of asking questions, and many of these books both ask and answer.
They also tackle foundational questions, such as the reliability of the Bible, the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the evidence that supports God’s active work in the world today.
I firmly believe that everyone, not just professional apologetists or pastors, should be able to share why they place their hope in Jesus.

Easy apologetics books for beginners
There are so many great Christian apologetics books, and more are published every year!
Some apologetics books require an academic or scholarly approach, which has its place.
But for this list, I left those out and focused on seven books that are accessible for new Christians, regardless of their academic chops.
To help, I’ve created a list of apologetics books for beginners that “everyday” Christians actually enjoy reading.
I’ve also kept it narrow on purpose to help ease “decision fatigue.”

Our family has an informal tradition of watching it every Easter!
Even now, rewatching it, it makes me laugh at the absurdity of a common false claim that the apostles just made the whole thing up.
It illustrates one of the reasons many apologetics books discuss: Why would the disciples be so willing to be persecuted and die?
(“Boiling oil?” one says at the end of the skit. “Classic!”)
Ok, humor aside, I share because it’s an example of just one of many, many reasons that believing in Jesus is a reasonable and logical thing to do.

“Mere Christianity” by C.S. Lewis is a timeless classic and one of the best beginner apologetics books.
After World War II, Lewis gave a series of radio talks to a war-weary nation hungry for hope.
Those talks became this book, offering clear, logical explanations of the Christian faith without jargon.
It’s an apologetics classic that many new believers continue to read, decade after decade.
It feels like a thoughtful conversation with a wise friend and remains an ideal starting point for anyone exploring apologetics.

2. ‘The Case for Christ’
“The Case for Christ” by Lee Strobel reads like a gripping investigation and is beloved as one of the best apologetics books for beginners.
A former atheist and award-winning journalist, Strobel set out to disprove Christianity after his wife’s conversion.
This is the book I read as a young adult that made me hungry to learn more about my Christian beliefs.
I have frequently recommended it as it’s an excellent mix of Strobel’s personal story and apologetic evidence.
His interviews with experts turned his skepticism into belief. Our editor still remembers this as the first apologetics book she read.
It also sparked a lifelong love for these resources.

3. ‘I Don’t Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist’
“I Don’t Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist” by Norman Geisler and Frank Turek offers a step-by-step roadmap for believers.
It’s a perfect book for high school seniors, college students, or anyone seeking a comprehensive yet accessible guide.
The authors developed it from real questions asked at universities and churches, making it one of the most practical apologetics books for beginners.

4. ‘Tactics’ by Greg Koukl
“Tactics” by Greg Koukl focuses on real-world conversations and teaches you to ask gentle, thoughtful questions instead of engaging in debates.
Koukl drew from years of radio calls and everyday encounters, creating a book that builds confidence for sharing your faith in Jesus with grace.
He’s now released an updated and expanded book with streaming video, which is great for a book club or small group!
Among our readers, it’s the most popular book on this list! And for good reason.
I personally believe and use the apologetics approach he teaches, which I learned during my 14 years as a newspaper journalist.
Often, the response someone gives you first is just a surface response, and doesn’t actually represent what they are thinking, wondering, or struggling with.
I would first try to understand where they are coming from and ask questions until they switched from a general “we” or “everyone” statements to personal “I” or “me” statements.

5. ‘Cold-Case Christianity’
“Cold-Case Christianity” by J. Warner Wallace brings a unique detective’s perspective that I personally appreciate.
A former cold-case homicide detective and atheist, Wallace investigated the Gospels and looked at evidence such as their eyewitness testimony.
Then he asked the question: Would the evidence for Jesus be strong enough to hold up in court? As is required in U.S. criminal courts, does the evidence leave no reasonable doubt?
His approach to apologetics is engaging and approachable, and his visuals are one reason why this made our list of the best beginner apologetics books.

6. ‘The Reason for God’
“The Reason for God” by Timothy Keller addresses the doubts many young professionals face.
This book was years in the making. It’s based on the real questions he answered as a pastor in New York City.
With so much suffering and injustice in the world, and so many other religions that claim to be the way, it’s understandable why people question Christianity’s truth.
And yet, readers are bound to find that the Bible actually addresses these deeper questions of meaning with compassion, logic, and clarity.
It’s a thoughtful book that addresses many of the existential questions of our time, including “Is God good?”

7. ‘On Guard’
“On Guard” by William Lane Craig was written at the urging of his wife to make deep apologetics accessible to everyday believers.
Craig distilled key arguments with illustrations and study aids, creating a training manual for the gentle defense of faith that aligns beautifully with our call, as believers, to be prepared to defend our faith (1 Peter 3:15).
A research professor with a doctorate in theology and a second doctorate in philosophy, Craig does a great job of making apologetics understandable.
Kudos to his wife, Jan, for encouraging him to “translate” the academics for the rest of us!
