About our editor
Mackenzie Ryan Walters
Mackenzie Ryan Walters is the editor of faithstoryteller.org. Mackenzie is a national award-winning journalist who’s worked for multiple newspapers during a 14-year journalism career.
She’s an author and editor of “Faith Storytellers: Unleash the Power of Your Story,” a resources for Christians who want to learn how to craft a compelling narrative testimony. The book includes more than 40 short stories that serve as testimony examples.
The Faith Storytellers story
While working at The Des Moines Register, Mackenzie co-founded the Des Moines Storytellers Project (now the Iowa Storytellers Project) and coached everyday people to get up on stage and tell a true, first-person story (similar to “The Moth Radio Hour”).
As part of the live storytelling event series, Mackenzie hosted an event called “Everyday Miracles.” The lineup included two Christians who shared personal stories about miracles they witnessed and that confirmed their belief in God. At the time, it was the most popular and well-attended event of the series.
It was then that Mackenzie realized the power of framing personal beliefs as a story that stayed in the first person (“I,” “me,” “my,” “mine”) — and critically, avoided telling someone else what to do (“you,” “your”) or assuming common belief (“we,” “our.”).
In 2019, Mackenzie began teaching Christian storytelling at her church, which included multiple live storytelling nights. During this time, she solidified the five-step Faith Storytellers Framework she now teaches.
After holding a vision session with the initial volunteer storytellers, Mackenzie sensed the mission was broader than her church. She launched the Faith Storytellers website and social media channels soon after, and began working with volunteer storytellers from across the United States and other countries to edit and publish written stories.
What’s unique about Faith Storytellers is that no experience is required to submit a story. Mackenzie works with volunteer writers collaboratively to edit their stories. She’s proud to be a first or early step in the personal ministries of multiple storytellers who have gone on to write books, speak at Christian or secular organizations, and be interviewed in Christian or mainstream media.
In 2024, Mackenzie published the book “Faith Storytellers: Unleash the Power of Your Story,” which expanded her approach to teaching Christian storytelling and testimony writing.
In 2025, Mackenzie began partnering with churches, conferences, and other organizations to bring Faith Storytellers workshops and live storytelling nights to communities.
To date, Faith Storytellers has held multiple classes and workshops, published more than 50 faith stories, and published a book! Mackenzie is currently writing a workbook.
