Bible verses for anxiety: God reminds us not to fear
The command to "Do not fear," or similar phrases like "Be not afraid" and "Do not be afraid," appears hundreds of times throughout the Bible.
I’ve often heard that God reminds us not to be afraid 365 times in the Bible — one for each day. I’ve never counted, but regardless of the exact number, the frequency of God’s reminder is clear. He asks us to trust him regularly, not just weekly or monthly, but daily or hourly.
One reason we regularly share stories about trusting God is that we need the reminder, too! Take comfort from these verses and read through our many stories on God’s love, trust, and provision.
The Old Testament: Do not be discouraged or afraid
These verses often come directly from God, given to prophets or the people of Israel as a promise of His presence and strength.
Genesis 15:1: “After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: "Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward."
Deuteronomy 31:6: "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you."
Joshua 1:9: "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go."
Psalm 23:4: "Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me."
Psalm 27:1: “The LORD is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?”
Psalm 118:6: “The LORD is with me; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”
Isaiah 41:10: "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."
Isaiah 43:1: “But now, this is what the LORD says—he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: "Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine."
The New Testament: Do not worry, there is no fear in love
In the New Testament, the command is often given by Jesus or His followers, reminding believers of the provision and peace found through faith.
Matthew 6:34: "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."
Luke 12:32: "Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom."
John 14:27: "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."
2 Timothy 1:7: “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.”
Hebrews 13:6: “So we say with confidence, "The LORD is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?"
1 John 4:18: “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.”

God’s protection: Timothy B. Horne was serving as a missionary in Ecuador when a confrontation with a gang member turned violent. While aware of God’s presence, Timothy didn’t have time to say a specific prayer — instead, God’s hedge of protection surrounded him and four friends who might have otherwise died in the street in front of their church.
