What to bring to a Christian writers conference: Preparation checklist & tips

Attending a Christian writers conference is an exciting step in your faith and writing journey! I’ve personally benefited from the knowledge I’ve gained during sessions and the connections I’ve made.

I still remember my first writers conference — I was so nervous, I called my mom that night from the hotel room and cried!

Now, looking back, I realize I shouldn’t have been nervous.

Faith-based writing conferences are encouraging, inspiring, and supportive, at least in my experience.

To help your first event go smoother than mine, I’ve prepared a writers conference packing list as well as key Christian writing conference tips to help you make the most of your time.

What should you bring to a Christian writers conference?

Here’s my checklist for my must-pack items when attending a writing conference.

  1. Business cards include your name, email, website or social handle, and a short bio or tagline (e.g., “Writing testimonies to glorify God”). Handing out cards during breaks builds quick, lasting connections in the Christian writing community.

  2. Comfortable, modest attire. Pack modest clothing—slacks, blouses, skirts, or dresses that are neat and hole-free. Layer for varying room temperatures. Comfortable shoes are a must; you’ll walk between sessions, meals, and fellowship times.

  3. Notebook and pens: Carry a dedicated notebook for workshop notes, inspired ideas, and prayer prompts. A reliable pen (or several) ensures you capture thoughts even if devices fail. Review notes each evening to reinforce learning.

  4. Laptop, tablet, or phone + charger: Bring your device for editing pitches, accessing handouts, or taking digital notes. A portable charger prevents battery drain during long days. Use devices respectfully—silence notifications during sessions and worship.

  5. Query letters, one-sheets, and pitch materials for writers conference. Print 5–10 copies of your query letter and a clean one-sheet (title, genre, word count, hook, bio). Have digital versions ready, too. If you have a proposal or sample chapters, bring extras. These tools are essential for agent/editor appointments.

  6. Sturdy tote bag. Choose a bag with pockets to carry books, swag, handouts, a water bottle, and a Bible. Hands-free carrying keeps you organized and ready for spontaneous conversations.

  7. Personal essentials: a water bottle, light snacks, a Bible or devotional, any medications, and a small prayer journal. Many venues provide basics, but having your own items reduces stress.

Practical Christian writing conference tips

  • Book one-on-one appointments early: Critique slots, pitch meetings, and editor consultations fill quickly. Register as soon as possible. Seriously. I’ve made this mistake and regretted not being able to connect with an editor or other publishing industry professional. Many Christian authors say this alone is worth attending the conference.

  • Prepare pitch materials ahead: Practice your 1–2 minute elevator pitch. Focus on hook, genre, word count, and why your story matters to Christian readers. This is your opportunity to showcase your manuscript and make an elevator pitch. Learn from my experience and prepare a brief elevator pitch that clearly states what your story is and who it’s for, specifically. (I promise, your book is not for everyone.)

  • Dress and act with respect: Modest attire honors the setting. During worship and prayer times, participate fully and quietly — turn phones to silent. Many writers and authors love attending Christian conferences and retreats instead of secular ones because of the faith-based focus.

  • Mindset & spiritual preparation: Before you go, pray for open doors, a receptive heart, and divine appointments. Set 2–3 clear goals (i.e., “Connect with three writers,” “Get feedback on my testimony,” “Seek God’s direction”). I personally believe that time spent connecting and meeting other Christian writers and industry leaders is never wasted.
